The IIS Group is characterized by a multidisciplinary and versatile structure, consisting of operating divisions specialized in different areas of expertise, offering comprehensive services in many industries, such as oil & gas, civil and industrial infrastructures, power generation, transportation, chemical, electromechanical and manufacturing, in Italy and abroad.
The Italian Institute of Welding (IIS) aims at "promoting and encouraging in every field the development of welding and allied technologies, contributing to its knowledge and diffusion".
For this purpose IIS is strongly committed in information and dissemination activities.
IIS is a founding member of the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and European Welding Federation (EWF). Within these organizations the Institute has always held apical positions.
Moreover IIS cooperates or is in charge of various European and international executive committees of research and standardization.
The active presence of the IIS in these bodies leads to a very intense international activity generating frequent contacts with similar institutions of the countries with the highest industrial development.
IIS holds the Chairmanship the "Welding Commitee" of UNI (the Italian Standardization body); in this role IIS actively participates in ISO (International Standardization Organization) and CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation) technical works.
During its activity, that has lasted almost seventy years, IIS has contributed to the development of a large number of technical standards, exploiting both his knowledge resulting from the studies and researches, and from years of hands on experience in technical assistance activities.
IIS currently employs about 45 people and promotes institutional activities organizing technical events and conferences, coordinating marketing and commercial strategies for the Group as well as research and development; ensuring and managing the external relations through its media. Within IIS are main Group corporate services.

EWF - EUROPEAN FEDERATION FOR WELDING JOINING AND CUTTING AISBL.
EWF - European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting, is an international non-profit umbrella association aiming at the collaboration in the study and solution of welding-related problems encountered within its fields of competence and in the removal of technical barriers. The exchange of scientific and technical information, the preparation of harmonised rules for the education and training of personnel involved in welding, joining and related technologies, and the encouragement of projects for co-operative research, enable EWF to act as the representative of the welding community in Europe. EWF is an organization registered in the EC Transparency Portal.
EWF, in conjunction with the relevant national welding institutes and organisations of 31 European countries, has made great efforts in the updating and harmonisation of training and education in the field of welding technology. It is a pioneering organisation in education and qualification, and a good practice example, developing the first truly harmonised scheme embracing all European countries for the training of personnel at all levels, from crafts people to professional engineers.
It started in the 1980’s an analysis of the existing levels of education in welding in the EU and EFTA countries and, upon the results, it was possible to define common harmonised levels of education, training and qualification.
Aware of the importance of the mobility of labour within Europe, a lot of work has been put on the harmonisation of a standard examination system, to ensure that welding personnel trained in the EWF system is examined in a uniform way, allowing the implementation of the developed Certification system where the recognition of personnel skills is able according to the same minimum standard.
The EWF expertise can be quickly summarized:
31 European + 15 non-European Countries;
41 Authorized National Bodies, responsible for national implementation of the EWF System;
683 Authorized Training Bodies, schools, centres, institutes using EWF Course Guidelines and awarding EWF diplomas;
Harmonized VET system for all European countries, from EQF level 2 to 7;
Network of Large Companies and SMEs (50.000+);
Implementation of the system in Higher Education institutions (EWF Level 6/7);
Certification of Companies;
260.000+ Diplomas issued.
